Guest speaker:  Dr Tinyiko Cavin Shivambu

Dr Tinyiko Shivambu was born and bred in the Louis Trichardt Municipality of Limpopo province. Dr Shivambu is a distinguished zoologist and academic leader whose work bridges ecological research, invasive species management, biodiversity and conservation. He holds a PhD in Zoology from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, preceded by an MSc in Zoology from the University of Pretoria and a BSc Honours in Zoology and undergraduate degrees in Botany and Zoology, both from the University of Venda.

Currently serving as a Lecturer at the University of South Africa (UNISA), Dr Shivambu leads modules in nature conservation and supervises a growing cohort of Honours, MSc, and PhD students. His mentorship spans topics from alien plant invasions to wildlife ecology and stakeholder engagement in conservation management.

Dr Shivambu has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications, including recent studies on alien rose-ringed parakeets, pet trade dynamics, and biodiversity risk assessments. His research has appeared in prestigious journals such as Veterinary Parasitology, Global Ecology and Conservation, Scientific Data, and NeoBiota, and he is a contributing academic editor for Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution and Journal of Zoological Systematics and Evolutionary Research. He served as a key member of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment’s (DFFE) steering committee for the eradication program targeting the alien invasive rose-ringed parakeet. Additionally, he contributed to national scientific bodies as an expert review panellist for the National Research Foundation (NRF), SANBI’s Alien Species Risk Analysis Panel (ASRARP), and multiple scientific journals.

With deep roots in South Africa’s biodiversity landscape and a passion for integrating science with policy and practice, Dr Shivambu brings a unique perspective to avian conservation, especially in the context of alien invasive species and the pet trade.
