Dr Michèle Pfab, Scientific Coordinator for the Scientific Authority at SANBI

Meet Dr Michèle Pfab

Dr Michèle Pfab is a respected conservation scientist with extensive experience in biodiversity planning, sustainable wildlife use and international wildlife trade.

She graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1997 with an MSc in Resource Conservation Biology. Shortly afterwards, she joined the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment, where she led the provincial conservation-planning project that ultimately produced the Gauteng Conservation Plan.

During her time with the department, Michèle also developed several biodiversity policies and implementation systems to support the application of Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations in Gauteng.

In April 2009, she joined the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), where she holds the position of Scientific Coordinator for the Scientific Authority.

The Scientific Authority advises the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment on matters relating to the sustainable use of and trade in wildlife. In support of this mandate, Michèle coordinates an ongoing programme focused on the assessment, monitoring and research of species regulated under the Threatened or Protected Species Regulations (TOPS) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

She also represents the Scientific Authority as part of the South African delegation attending CITES Conferences of the Parties.

With her strong scientific background and considerable experience in wildlife policy and international trade, Michèle brings valuable insight into how science, conservation and sustainable use can work together to support responsible wildlife management.
