The virus which causes Beak and feather disease in parrots (and other birds) is a very small virus. This is single stranded DNA virus and is a naked (non-envelope) virus. This has very far reaching consequences when it comes to biosecurity and disinfection.

As was clear from the webinar – we are still a very long way off any form of vaccine for the control of BFDV. Even if there is a vaccine – good biosecurity remains essential to reduce the virus load to get the best possible results from any possible future vaccine.
