William Horsfield is the founder and director of Amazona Endangered Parrot Breeding Facility, established in 1992 near Durban, South Africa. Over the past three decades, Amazona has grown into one of Africa’s leading endangered parrot breeding facilities and has earned international recognition for its contribution to responsible aviculture, conservation breeding, and species management.

With more than 30 years of hands-on experience, William has worked with a wide variety of endangered parrot species, developing breeding programmes that focus on genetic diversity, husbandry excellence, and long-term sustainability. His work has helped establish Amazona as a respected name among aviculturists and conservation organisations worldwide.

William is particularly well known for his extensive work with the Cape Parrot (Poicephalus robustus), South Africa’s only endemic parrot species. Through years of research, captive breeding, and collaboration with conservation initiatives, he has played an important role in advancing knowledge of the species and promoting its long-term conservation.

In addition to managing Amazona, William has written numerous articles for avicultural publications and has presented lectures to bird clubs, breeders, and conservation groups both locally and internationally. He is widely respected for his practical approach to breeding, his willingness to share knowledge, and his commitment to responsible aviculture.
